Who am I?

My name is John C North, and I'm a independent author who writes with a flare of the fantastical and the brutal! I'm the author of The Gorgon Series, a niche, anime inspired, YA fantasy adventure series following a pair of reunited sisters taking on demons, demi-gods, vampires, and the onset of world war. I'm a huge fan of anime, movies, TV, books, the whole nine. I will sink my teeth into anything with a good story! When I'm not writing or studying the craft through media, you may find me eating ramen, exploring Atlanta with my wife, watching American football, or occasionally throwing the frisbee with friends. Or, my favorite, talking about stories :) .

Had to share this because…yall 😭. So, yesterday my wife and I ran to Phoenix and Dragon, as we try to do every so often, and I had a chat with the managers about getting my book in their store and leaving my flyer for it there. Amidst all the chatter, a customer came up to me asking about my book, saying it may be up her alley. After my pitch, yall, she literally bought a copy from me off the spot. Thank GOD I keep a physical copy on me 😭

🦂 As an indie author this meant so, so, SO much to me. I’ve had people rave about my work and I hold them very dearly. But in person? At a local store I frequent? It’s just a whole other feeling and I’m so thankful for it.

QOTD - What inspired your book/WIP?👀

Happy Late Memorial Day y’all! We’re talking story inspirations: the very things that sparked that initial idea that propelled you into that creative rabbit hole 😁

🦂For me, at least as it relates to my Epic YA Fantasy Series, Gorgon, I had two primary inspirations: Mythology/folklore🐍 and Anime💮

🦂 Now, Myth and folklore of any culture is nothing new in the world of fiction. That doesn’t make it any less fun, especially when you take familiar figures—Medusa, King Arthur, Zeus,The Nine-Tailed Fox, Son WuKong—and put such a massive twist on them that you have to forget almost everything you know about them! That’s what I do with Gorgon. I don’t aim for soft-retellings. I aim for completely new, original(ish) characters inspired by these many myths and folklore👀. Throwing fantastical figures vampires, dragons, and demons don’t hurt either 😂

🦂 If you’ve read The Crimson Witch, anime inspo is very given. It’s a medium I’ve consumed lots of and something that I’d LOVE to turn Gorgon into one day 🤞🏾 That inspo derives more from how magic is used and magic-oriented combat, which there is PLENTY OF in Gorgon. Also, certain emotional scenes too, which anime can be most famous for if they do it right.

I love both of these things and I continue to use these sources of inspo not only in my current fantasy series, but various other WIPs as well. Also LOVE catching them in other folks work.

Hey All!! Hope the new year is treating everyone well! Got some Gorgon Updates for you 👀!

🦂 The formatting for the 3rd edition of The Crimson Witch is DONE!👏🏾✨ Which means all that’s left is to get a few technical stuff done in my end before announcing a release date! Stay tuned, as I plan to hopefully have a date up within the next few weeks!

🦂 Also, I’ve already started my latest round of self-edits for Book 2, The Minotaur’s Wrath, and will be calling for Beta/ARC readers sometime this year! If not by late this year, then next year for sure I plan to publish the Minotaur’s Wrath (finally😭). I’ll also be sharing more content highlighting both, so stay tuned!

🦂For the uninitiated, Gorgon is an Epic, YA Fantasy adventure series following a power hungry witch navigating a chaotic world dominated by the all powerful Demi-Gods. While Aurora has access to powers greater than most witches her age, she has to contend with the drawbacks of her demonic aura, which always leads her to hurting others, and self-isolating. It’s only though meeting her sister, Princess Polaris, that she learns she can be much more than the monster everyone sees her as. Through her journeys, Aurora learns the importance of family, trauma healing, and finding her greater purpose that lies beyond physical strength. The cherry on top is that she learns that she’s a vessel to an unstable and highly sought after magical relic, that could provoke another war if it fell in the wrong hands.

Hey all! Been a while 😅 sorry about the radio silence! But let’s chat about a staple character in the Gorgon Series, Blair Salem.

💎 Blair is the MCs god-sister, caretaker, and probably the worst influence for young children with magic. She means well and is generally very sweet, but if you allow her to babysit, Blair will have your kid fighting the police by the end of the night 😅 (not hyperbole either…). She also has a rare genetic magic no one else has: crystal creation.

💎 As an ex-military agent with a grudge against the Demi-God let government, she seeks overwhelming power to overcome them. She strongly believes her talented young god-sister, Aurora, has the potential to help her achieve this goal. However, as you guys will read, Blair’s crimes and antics draw the attention of an unwanted group looking to use her powers for their own cause.

We’re on the last day of #anovelnovember and with a whole day left, I’ve already shattered my 50k words goal for the month! First I wanna thank @reneeduganwriting for hosting this challenge! It’s been a fun ride!!

🐍 Now obviously reaching the word count is a BIG WIN! Also getting a bit more insight on characters I’m not too familiar with (WFA since it’s much newer than Gorgon) and having characters that have never met interact with each other. As someone who writes fast paced action, this month I’ve mostly focused on non-action scenes. Character interactions, introspection, and dialogue. While I typically don’t struggle much with any, it was still a learning curve just given how new WFA is to me as a writer and the fact it’s different. It’s not high stakes or plot driven like Gorgon, so it’s more of a struggle in my brain to progress the story without some grand plot revelation lol.

❄️ A huge learning opportunity for me is keeping impactful interactions or moments more concise. As an over writer and someone who over explains, I live by “less is more”. I like to get to the point, but I’m also patient. As a writer I know I can still improve my striking a balance between the two, especially when there are more characters and plot at play.

🐍 Either way, this challenge was fantastic and I’m already looking forward to the next one!! Hope everyone enjoyed learning more about TDOM and WFA, and look forward to more in the future!! That’s all from me for now! Later ✌🏾

Hey all! Back for day 29 of #anovelnovember !! Since I missed turkey day yesterday (happy turkey day BTW! Hope everyone spent time with loved ones and ate tons!) this will be a two for one post. We’re talking about food in both Gorgon and WFA, and then we’re discussing what I’m thankful for with these WIPs and the challenge!!

🐍 So for Gorgon it’s simple. It’s caramel apples and Aurora’s favorite drink. She loves apple EVERYTHING but especially Carmel apples. Just be her witchy-side talking when it comes to taste.

❄️The second tasty pastry is called Skolebrød! Skolebrød Is a Norwegian snack (school bread) filled with custard and covered in coconut shavings! These buns are an instant favorite for everyone who tries them, and something Yuki takes a liking to while attending Ovita! For context, Ovita is in the fictional country of Valas, which is based on Norway (hence why some characters are named after Norse Gods. Marvel don’t come for me plz). Now, Yuki herself isn’t from Valas, so she’s technically a foreigner, but she loves her some sweets, hence Skolebrød becoming her favorite snack!

🐍 So, what are we thankful for. For one, this challenge itself. I have to give huge props to @reneeduganwriting for hosting this challenge, as it did two things for me I’ve been struggling with in recent years. One, posting consistently. I haven’t posted daily on this platform since 2020, mostly because of life lol. But I’ve been able to without burning out and still having a life/time to write. And two, it’s a nice alternative to using NaNoWriMo’s platform, which facilitated my writing goal in November in years past. (I don’t use Nano anymore bc…well if you haven’t heard the drama from last year, I recommend doing a bit of research 😅😅😅). It’s kept a fire under me and I’ve been able to get a good chunk done for both WIPs and getting more comfortable writing these characters than before (esp for WFA which was a lot more half-baked than those of Gorgon)

In any case, that’s all! We’re ALMOST AT THE FINISH LINE! Looking to break through the word count today, so wish me luck!! Later ✌🏾

Hey all! It’s day 26 of #anovelnovember and let’s talk about our biggest excitement for these projects!! Ft. Aurora and Yuki

🐍 This one’s fairly easy! Publishing! There’s no better feeling than holding your book in your hand, and it’s also great knowing that you have several other books under your belt😌 by the time TDOM and WFA book 1 are out, I’d have published five books in total! And I cannot wait for that!

❄️ It’ll be in the distant future. Even after the challenge these two projects won’t even be halfway done drafting wise. And as of now I’ve only published book 1 of Gorgon, and am in the process of repurposing it. BUT once book 1 is ready, I’m going full steam to release 2&3, so prepare to learn more about those projects!!

🐍 Also I can’t wait for more artwork of all these characters! I have 0 artwork for WFA and won’t for a while until the vision is complete. Considering everything’s anime inspired I have a few ideas of who to commission and I’m excited to see these characters realized 😊

🐍 For my manga fans, I very specifically chose certain volumes for certain stories just to give the vibes for various arcs (I.e. the Sasuke Retrieval Arc being the biggest inspo for TDOM) 👀

❄️ It’s no stranger, esp by now, that I’m heavily inspired by the animanga I consume and it inspires much of my writing and world building. It was and remains my dream to share similar stories packed with action and fun for those who were like me and couldn’t sit still or had a short attention span like I did as a kid 😅. So when these projects come out, I hope you can have as much fun with them as I did!!

Hey all! It’s day 20 of #Anovelnovember and #1linewednesday ! Sharing some lines I liked in my WIPs😌

🐍 If you’ve followed Gorgon or at least read book 1, it’s no stranger to you that Aurora has a temper and is willing to get reckless when it comes to something or someone she holds dear. Fast forward to book 4 and that trait of hers is put to the test once again. But, this time, her ire is slightly inflated more than usual. Who’s responsible and is about to find themselves on the receiving end of a fantastic beatdown?👀

❄️ Yukina’s a nice girl. She likes to be out the way and not be the center of attention. It’s hard when your mom’s a celebrity and everyone knows you for being a failure. Still, as meek and nervous as she can come across, she also has a BIT of a temper, especially when it comes to disrespect. She may not enjoy fighting as much as she did when she was younger, but speak ill on her or her family, and you’ll awaken the warrior within.

🐍 All character fight hype ASIDE, I’m definitely in the phase of reminding myself these are both first drafts since Everytime I put words on the page I want to ram my fist through the computer from how shit I think everything’s written 😭 But impulse aside, I’m pushing on!

❄️ WE’RE AT THE MIDPOINT OF THE GOAL! Now we have ten days to hit 50🥹🥹🥹 wish me luck because between holidays and such, it’s a full on writing blitz henceforth!!
